What, exactly, are the basic tests that a woman can have done to test for infertility?

Mystyk asked:

I have been told that there are a few certain tests that your doc will do first to test for infertility like blocked ovaries and others. I am wondering exactly what they are and the procedure of them? Also, can a man “do his thing” at home and take the sperm into the docs to be tested? I think doing that at home would be better as it would be a more relaxed and familiar atmosphere. I have heard that it is possible-but has anyone actually done this?? Thanks!
