What are the next steps in infertility treatment?

irene_nicks asked:

We are young and healthy and have been trying for a baby for over a year now. My lab results are perfect, I ovulate regularly, husband’s sperm is very good – we have no problems at all. But, for some reason we cannot concieve. What are the next steps in the fertility treatment? To reiterate, lab results have been done and show no problem. I have been ovulating regularly – so no problems there, also.

Have you had a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) yet?
That is usually the next step. It ensures that your uterus and fallopian tubes are not abnormal (size, shape, blockages). The best part of this test is that often it clears minor blockages as its being done, and fertility rates usually increase in the months after the test is preformed. As a matter of fact, after 2 years of infertility I had a HSG and wound up pregnant the next month.

Your doctor will likely look for structural problems that may be interfering (small uterus, blocked tubes, endometriosis, etc). This is usually done via ultrasound and/or HSG. If those also come back normal, your doctor may prescribe you medication to try to “improve” your ovulation.

Good luck and lots of baby dust!!!

Have you had any tests (other than labs) done like a HSG or a SIS? You should see a Reproductive Endocrinologist and they will likely do either of those tests first to make sure you don’t have any blockages in your Fallopian tubes. Depending on your age and the results of the tests above, your next step would likely be Clomid and either sex or Clomid and IUI. Good luck.
